2021 Hen/Athena Invitational

For the first time since March 9, 2020, the Sagehens returned to competition at our Pauley Tennis Complex for the Hen/Athena Invitational. Along with our Sixth Street rivals, we hosted teams from Divisions I and II, as well as NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics), for a three-day tournament with a “Hidden Dual” format. For each round, teams would play each other in one half of a dual match. In other words, teams would compete in four doubles matches or eight singles matches.

Over the course of three days in September of 2021, the Sagehens only dropped their singles and doubles rounds against Division I opponents from Cal State Northridge. The PPWT (Pomona-Pitzer Women’s Tennis) Team either won or split every other round against the remaining opponents, including Azusa Pacific, Biola, CMS (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps), Westmont, and Concordia.  

Soon after the invite ended, Coach Mike Morgan said, “After being away that long from competition and losing a season and half of tennis, it was incredibly inspiring and to be honest, pretty emotional to return to the courts with the Hens. The Hidden Dual format provides a chance for first and second years to get used to what the energy of a dual match feels like. It was a ton of fun and great to see the crew competing together again!”
